What & Why

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) has recently purchased property at 4500 W Marginal Way S for use as a new Drainage and Wastewater South Operations Center (SOC). The new facility will increase SPU’s operational efficiencies and space, provide closer proximity to our service areas, and create improved facilities for employees.

The SOC will be home to some of SPU’s Drainage and Wastewater field employees, work vehicles and equipment storage. These field employees clean and repair the City’s sewer and drainage systems, investigate waterway pollution, provide emergency response to storm events and natural disasters, and more.

Over the next few years, we will design and construct major tenant and site improvements, including:

  • Replace and improve building siding, roof, windows and doors
  • Upgrade interior, finishes and furnishings
  • Improve major utilities and building systems
  • Install new landscaping, parking and site drainage
  • Incorporate sustainable building and site features
  • Seek LEED Gold rating for building renovation

What’s happening now?

The Washington State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) Checklist and Determination of Non-Significance were issued on July 10, 2017. The environmental impacts of the proposed South Operations Facility have been analyzed and SPU has issued a Determination of Non-Significance.

SPU purchased the property in 2017 and is currently in the Design Development phase.

Project goals and benefits

SPU needs this new facility so we can continue to provide efficient and forward-looking utility services that keep Seattle the best place to live.
