One Less Truck Project
Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) was commissioned by the Seattle City Council to explore whether savings and efficiencies can be made by changing how often garbage is collected.
SPU believes that if every-other-week garbage collection were implemented citywide, it would:
- Reduce neighborhood traffic, noise and pollution.
- Save $6.4 million a year through operational efficiencies.
- Reduce waste going to the landfill.
A total of 800 single-family homes took part in the One Less Truck Project in four areas of the city from July 1 to December 31, 2012.
