One Less Truck Project
Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) has been commissioned by the Seattle City Council to explore whether savings and efficiencies can be made by changing how often garbage is collected.
SPU believes that if every-other-week garbage collection were implemented citywide, it would:
- Reduce neighborhood traffic, noise and pollution.
- Save $6.4 million a year through operational efficiencies.
- Reduce waste going to the landfill.
A total of 800 single-family homes will take part in the One Less Truck Project in four areas of the city from July 1 to December 31, 2012.
Between July 1 and December 31, 2012, One Less Truck Project participants will have their garbage collected every other week on their regular collection day, instead of every week. Food and yard waste will continue to be collected weekly. Recycling will continue to be collected every other week. Garbage and food/yard waste rates will be different during this period as well.
