Species Research & Monitoring - Upland Forest
Old-growth forest provides essential habitat for federally listed species.
Several HCP species of concern utilize old-growth forest habitats. We are focusing our research and monitoring on marbled murrelets and northern spotted owls because they are both federally listed as threatened and their populations in Washington are continuing to decline. Our marbled murrelet studies include both population surveys and evaluating nesting habitat. We conduct spotted owl surveys at intervals specified in the HCP to determine the number of owls using the watershed. In addition, we are using species-habitat models to evaluate wildlife habitat within the watershed for a number of other key HCP-listed species.
