Sockeye Hatchery

Broodstock Collection

  • Cedar River collection weir and trap.
  • Collecting Broodstock.
  • Open tip gate at the weir.

Broodstock for the hatchery are collected from the Cedar River at River Mile 1.7, near Renton’s Cedar River Park. The hatchery generally collects sockeye from early September to November at this site.

Weir design and operations reduce the risk of unintended effects on naturally spawning salmon. The tip gate, shown in a photo to the right, is opened regularly to allow Chinook salmon to pass the weir without harm.
