About SPU’s Water Meters

Since 1980, the City of Seattle has been purchasing residential water meters from the Invensys Manufacturing Company located in Orlando, Florida. These meters will accurately measure all water flow - including leaky faucets, toilets, etc.

All Precision Manufacturing Company meters come with a silver serrated dial that spins when water is being used on property. The dial is located on the register face below the main register dial. The rotation of the serrated dial is proportional to the water flow on your property.

Water leaks from faucets, toilets and pipes can go undetected until you receive a higher than expected bill. Leaks can be avoided and/or minimized by conducting your own periodic inspection and repairs.

Meter accuracy
Seattle Public Utilities Water Meter Maintenance Section uses state-of-the-art testing equipment to test ¾ inch – 12 inch inside pipe diameter water meters. All water meter flow test equipment is tested and certified by the State of Washington’s Weights and Measure Division for accuracy.

All new water meters are calibrated and certified by the manufacturers in accordance with Industry Standards (American Water Works Association C 700) prior to shipment to the City of Seattle.

Unit of measurement
Water meters for Seattle Public Utilities measure in cubic feet. Note that 1 cubic foot is equal to 7.48 gallons of water.
