Why SPU supports green building
Many green building strategies support the goals of Seattle Public Utilities, as the entity responsible for managing solid waste (garbage and recycling), water, wastewater and drainage functions for the City of Seattle:
Waste reduction and recycling
- Building deconstruction and salvage operations reduce waste by giving a second life to building materials. Designing buildings with the minimum number of materials can reduce construction cost.
- Actively managing construction waste and recycling on job sites reduces the amount of construction debris entering landfills.
- Designing flexible spaces that require fewer modifications means a reduced likelihood of tear-out and waste.
- Detailing and designing for durability extends building life and reduces waste.
Water conservation
- High-efficiency fixtures and systems reduce potable water demand.
- Water-wise landscapes can eliminate the need for permanent irrigation systems. This helps minimize summer water use, right at the time when our supplies dwindle for the year.
- Captured rainwater can provide a free source of water for landscapes and toilet flushing.
Surface water quality and drainage
- Designs such as pervious paving, storm water swales, and even green roofs can reduce stormwater flows and cleanse runoff.
- Careful choice of materials for building exteriors and landscape elements help protect surface water quality.
