2009 Garbage and Recycling Changes Frequently Asked Questions
What new services are coming in 2009?
In April of 2009:
- • All food scraps, including meat and dairy products, will be allowed in residential food and yard waste carts.
- • Food and yard waste will be collected weekly.
- • The enhanced food and yard waste collection services will be offered to all single-family residential households, apartments, and businesses.
- • Glass will go in the same residential recycling container as paper and plastic.
- • More plastic materials will be able to go in residential recycling bins.
- • Solid waste collectors will use new low-emission trucks that meet or exceed federal standards. Sixty percent of the trucks will run on a bio-diesel blend and 40 percent will run on compressed natural gas, dramatically reducing key pollutants in neighborhoods.
Who will pick up my garbage, recycling, and yard waste?
The City’s new solid waste collection contracts will be with Waste Management, Inc. and Seattle-based newcomer CleanScapes, Inc. Waste Management will collect all services from residents and businesses in south and northwest Seattle, CleanScapes will collect all services from residents and businesses in central and northeast Seattle. Residential customer service and billing will continue to be through the City of Seattle.
How do I find out more about these changes?
The city will conduct a major education campaign in early 2009. Information will be sent to your mailbox and posted on the Seattle Public Utilities’ web site.
What day will my collection day be?
Collection days have not been determined. Some customers will have a new collection day. You will receive a new collection calendar highlighting your collection day prior to the service change in April 2009.
