Portable Works

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) Portable Works Collection is a rotating collection of more than 445 artworks in all media, representing many of the artists collected by the city of Seattle since 1973. The collection includes sculpture, painting, works on paper, glass, mixed media, prints, photography and textiles.

The Seattle Office of Arts and Culture manages purchase, storage, handling, maintenance and rental of SPU’s collection in consultation with SPU. SPU makes periodic purchases of new art. For instance, in 2009, SPU commissioned eight emerging artists to create site specific artwork in specific locations within the SPU departments. These emerging artists gained experience with the public art commissioning and contracting process.

The artworks are exhibited primarily in public areas of SPU facilities. SPU portable artworks are also made available for rent and display in other City departments. Rental fees are based upon the acquisition value of the art plus inflation. The purpose of the Portable Works Collection is to raise public awareness of and support for the arts by displaying art in the working environment of public buildings. Here, SPU employees are able to live with the artwork each day and experience a wide array of artistic and cultural expression. Artworks in Seattle Public Utilities’ facilities enhance those spaces for the employees.
