Climate Change Mitigation

SPU is committed to be carbon neutral by 2015. We're approaching climate change mitigation (lessening the severity and consequences) through the reduction and control of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the atmosphere.

As part of its GHG mitigation focus, SPU joined the Climate Registry, an independent, non-profit organization that sets international standards for calculating, verifying and reporting GHG emissions. SPU has since verified its 2009 GHG inventory and plans to develop and verify inventories for subsequent years.

SPU’s verified emissions for 2009 were 14,138 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e, a unit that accounts for the different effects of various GHGs). Roughly two thirds of SPU’s emissions are associated with our vehicular fleet and the operation of our two water treatment facilities.
