University of Washington Burke-Gilman Trail Projects

Project Description

Work has already begun on construction projects to improve the Burke-Gilman Trail and the surrounding areas, and more construction is on the way. This includes the Montlake Triangle and Rainier Vista, Maple and Terry halls, the new Sound Transit Link light rail stations and power upgrades by Seattle City Light.

Beginning this spring, University of Washington (UW) will close portions of the Burke-Gilman Trail between Brooklyn Avenue Northeast and Mason Road, just east of the Rainier Vista, to facilitate these projects and the construction of a new, wider Burke-Gilman Trail with separation for people who walk and people who ride bikes, dozens of new lights, more blue emergency phones, better trail intersections and ADA access, and improved sightlines. Construction on phases of these projects will begin at different times, but by Summer 2014 the full detour will be in place.

In preparation for the detour, the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) has made changes along NE 40th St. between Brooklyn Ave. NE and 15th Ave. NE to accommodate more bicycles and pedestrians.  These changes along this stretch include:

  • New pavement from Brooklyn Ave NE to 15th Ave NE.
  • Installation of a cycle track or two-way protected bicycle lanes on the south side of the street. 
  • Conversion of the signal at University Way NE & NE 40th St to be an all-way stop.
  • Addition of an all-pedestrian phase for the signal at 15th Ave NE & NE 40th St and an upgrade of the pedestrian signal to have countdowns.
  • Repainted marked crosswalks at Brooklyn Ave. NE, University Way NE, and 15th Ave. NE.

SDOT and UW want to help keep you safe and informed during this detour.

Watching out for each other--whether walking, riding a bike, or driving a vehicle--is a shared responsibility.  Take extra care during the construction.  Look out for other road users and make eye contact or wave to others – the more awareness motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians have, the more we can better ensure everyone’s safety.

Montlake Triangle Projects

The University of Washington is constructing a new connection for pedestrians and bicyclists to head up onto campus from the Montlake Triangle.  A new land bridge will extend the existing Rainier Vista and connect it to the future pedestrian bridge for the light rail station.  Click HERE for more information.

The University of Washington is demolishing the existing Terry Hall and 1101 Café Building and constructing two new buildings for student housing in its place. Click HERE for more information.

Sound Transit University of Washington Station

Sound Transit is constructing a new light rail station next to Husky Stadium.  This will be the northern terminus of the U Link extension and will provide regional access to campus, UW Medical Center, other Husky athletic sites and surrounding neighborhoods.  Click HERE for more information.

Electrical Improvements Along the Burke-Gilman Trail

Seattle City Light will be improving the reliability and capacity of electrical systems feeding the University of Washington.  The work includes building a new duct bank and installing conduits, vaults, and new electrical cables.  Click HERE for more information.
