University Bridge
Painting Project
The University Bridge spans Portage Bay, linking
the University District with the Eastlake and Capitol
Hill communities. It is the second of the four Lake
Washington Ship Canal Bridges. The University
Bridge was originally built in 1919 and remodeled in
1933. President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the
bridge on April 7, 1933.
Project Description
The purpose of this project is to extend the life of the University Bridge. The project includes washing, removing rust and
damaged paint, applying primer paint where necessary and repainting all of the structural steel on the University Bridge
(spans Portage Bay). This project also involves repainting the railings and the light and power poles.
The project covers the entire bascule: all of the steel on the south end and the steel-only portions of the north end. It
will also include painting of the stairway handrails. This project is funded by the City’s General Maintenance Budget
(Cumulative Reserve Fund).
