History

In 1965, Seattle community leaders established “Seattle Bicycle Sundays” - opening the streets and connecting several parks along a 3-mile stretch of Lake Washington Boulevard.  Excited by this new, fun way for citizens to see and connect with their community, many other cities also established similar programs and now there are over 70 U.S. cities participating yearly in the Open Streets Movement. Celebrating over 50 years of open streets events like Bicycle Sunday and Seattle Summer Streets, we’re expanding our open streets efforts with a new event series, Seattle Summer Parkways.

Check out this great video that explains the power behind the movement and highlights these amazing events around the world.
