The South Lake Union Streetcar: Construction Guide

September 2006

The Seattle Streetcar Monthly Construction Guide previews upcoming construction activities for the South Lake Union Streetcar Project. The construction guide provides general information about the type and duration of work and traffic control plans. During construction the Project team will make every effort to minimize construction impacts to local businesses and residents.

Please note, some changes and adjustments to the schedule and scope of work are likely. For more information please contact Josh Stepherson, Streetcar Community Liaison, at (206) 684-3136.

In September 2006, the Project team will begin construction of the streetcar trackway and continue work related City Light (SCL) and Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) infrastructure.

Trackway construction features excavation of a shallow (20") trench, formwork for reinforcing bars and track placement, and concrete encasement of the track and reinforcement. In selected locations, track drains are also installed, requiring installation of drainage pipes outside of the trackway to connect to existing drainage facilities.

The Project team will install a third large electrical vault and continue work on the ductbanks for the SCL Downtown Network. This new infrastructure is being installed to ensure SCL service is not impacted by Streetcar rail construction or operations. SPU water mains that conflict with Streetcar facilities will be replaced, and existing SPU drainage infrastructure upgraded with the Project.

Most construction will occur in these areas:
  • Westlake Avenue Corridor, between Stewart Street and Denny Way
  • Fairview Avenue Corridor, between Valley Street and Yale Street
Planned construction activities include:

Install streetcar rail in the intersection of Fairview Avenue North and Valley Street. Excavate, construct rail, pour track slab and plate over streetcar rail. This work features a shallow trackway excavation and installation of pre-curved rail segments. To minimize traffic impacts on this high volume commuter connection to and from Interstate 5, this work will occur over two weekends (currently planned for 9/23 & 9/30) and will include night work. The traffic control plan will include lane closures from the I-5 Mercer Exit, along Fairview Avenue North and Valley Street. Detour routes will be provided, with extensive signage and advanced notification.

Install electrical vault on Virginia Street between Westlake Avenue and 6th Avenue. Excavate, shore, set, and backfill 10X20X10 foot electrical vault. This work will require deep excavation (approximately 20 feet deep). The work will require periodic closures of this segment of Virginia Street to traffic. To minimize traffic and transit impacts on this transit emphasis street, installation of the vault is planned to occur during several weekends and includes night work.

Install electrical ductbank in the 6th Avenue Alley between Metropolitan Towers and Plaza 600. Excavate, shore, set conduit, and backfill approximately a 3' wide trench. This work will require deep excavation (12 to 18 feet deep), and require the temporary closure of a two lanes of traffic on Westlake and the closure of the alley. The anticipated construction duration is approximately two weeks.

Install electrical ductbank along 6th Avenue between Stewart Street and Virginia Street. Excavate, shore, set conduit, and backfill approximately a 3' wide trench. This work will require deep excavation (12 to 18 feet deep) and will require the temporary closure of several lanes of traffic during construction on Westlake. The anticipated construction duration is approximately two weeks.

Installation of water restraints along the Westlake Avenue corridor between 6th Avenue and 9th Avenue. Excavate, cap and backfill water valves that are connected to the Westlake Avenue water main. This work will require a temporary water service shutdown for businesses and residents connected to the waterline. Affected businesses and residents will be notified at least 72 hours in advance.

Install 8" water line at the intersection of Terry Avenue and Harrison Street. This work will require a temporary water service shutdown for businesses and residents connected to the waterline. Affected businesses and residents will be notified at least 72 hours in advance.
