The South Lake Union Streetcar: Construction Guide October 2006
The Seattle Streetcar Monthly Construction Guide previews upcoming construction activities for the South Lake Union Streetcar Project. The construction guide provides general information about the type and duration of work and traffic control plans. During construction the Project team will make every effort to minimize construction impacts to local businesses and residents.
Please note, some changes and adjustments to the schedule and scope of work are likely. For more information please contact Josh Stepherson, Streetcar Community Liaison, at (206) 684-3136. In October 2006, work related to City Light (SCL) and Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) infrastructure will continue, the shipment of streetcar rail will arrive from overseas and the Project team will begin construction of the streetcar trackway along Fairview Avenue North. Several ongoing SCL construction activities will be completed by the end of October or early November (see below). Work hours may be extended 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in order to complete SCL work prior to the Downtown holiday moratorium. Trackway construction features excavation of a shallow (20") trench, formwork for reinforcing bars and track placement, and concrete encasement of the track and reinforcement. In selected locations, track drains are also installed, requiring installation of drainage pipes outside of the trackway to connect to existing drainage facilities. The Project team will install the third large electrical vault and continue work on the ductbanks for the SCL Downtown Network. This new infrastructure is being installed to ensure SCL service is not impacted by Streetcar rail construction or operations. SPU water mains that conflict with Streetcar facilities will be replaced, and existing SPU drainage infrastructure upgraded with the Project. Most construction will occur in these areas:
Install electrical vault on Virginia Street between Westlake Avenue and 6th Avenue. Excavate, shore, set, and backfill 10X20X10 foot electrical vault. This work will require deep excavation (approximately 20 feet deep). To minimize traffic and transit impacts on this transit emphasis street, installation of the vault is planned to occur over the weekends of 10/14/06 and includes night work. Begin installation of streetcar rail along Fairview Avenue North near Yale Street. Excavate, construct rail, pour track slab and plate over streetcar rail. This work features a shallow trackway excavation and installation of rail. Construction will occur during normal business hours and will not require the closure of streets or intersections along Fairview. Construction will start sometime around 10/24/06. Complete installation of an electrical ductbank in the 6th Avenue Alley between Metropolitan Towers and Plaza 600. Excavate, shore, set conduit, and backfill approximately a 3' wide trench. This work will require deep excavation (12 to 18 feet deep), and require the temporary closure of a two lanes of traffic on Westlake and the closure of the alley. Complete installation of an electrical ductbank along 6th Avenue between Stewart Street and Virginia Street. Excavate, shore, set conduit, and backfill approximately a 3' wide trench. This work will require deep excavation (12 to 18 feet deep) and will require the temporary closure of several lanes of traffic during construction on Westlake. Complete installation of an electrical ductbank on Stewart Street between Westlake Avenue and 6th Avenue. Excavate, shore, set conduit, and backfill approximately a 3' wide trench. This work will require deep excavation (12 to 18 feet deep) and will require the temporary closure of several lanes of traffic during construction on Westlake. Complete installation of an electrical ductbank on Virginia Street between 6th Avenue and 7th Avenue. Excavate, shore, set conduit, and backfill approximately a 3' wide trench. This work will require deep excavation (12 to 18 feet deep) and will require the temporary closure of several lanes of traffic during construction on Westlake. Begin installation of an electrical ductbank along Westlake from the Plaza 600 Alley to 7th Avenue Excavate, shore, set conduit, and backfill approximately a 3' wide trench. This work will require deep excavation (12 to 18 feet deep) and will require the temporary closure of several lanes of traffic during construction on Westlake. The anticipated construction duration is approximately three weeks. *Note: Work hours for installation of some segments of the electrical ductbank will be extended 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. in order to complete SCL work prior to the Downtown holiday moratorium. Construct new sidewalk on the north side of Valley Street between Fairview Avenue North and Westlake Avenue North.
