The South Lake Union Streetcar: Construction Guide

July 2007

The Seattle Streetcar Monthly Construction Guide previews upcoming construction activities for the South Lake Union Streetcar Project. The construction guide provides general information about the type and duration of work and traffic control plans. During construction the Project team will make every effort to minimize construction impacts to local businesses and residents.

Please note, some changes and adjustments to the schedule and scope of work are likely. For more information please contact Josh Stepherson, Streetcar Community Liaison, at (206) 684-3136.

In July 2007, the Seattle Streetcar Team will complete installation of track in the downtown area, install sub-stations, continue to set trolley poles, conclude the grind & overlay of Westlake Avenue and re-stripe roadway. Work will continue on the Streetcar maintenance facility.

DOWNTOWN AREA

Westlake Avenue between Olive Way and Denny Way

Achieved substantial completion for advanced utility work related to the Seattle Streetcar Project.

Completed installation of streetcar trolley pole foundations

Installed Streetcar track between 9 th Avenue and Virginia Street

TRACK INSTALLATION

Install Streetcar track on Westlake Avenue between Stewart Street and Virginia Street

  • Complete by end of July

Traffic control: One lane in each direction maintained. Parking on both sides of Westlake Avenue restricted near construction zone.

- 7 th Avenue closed to traffic between until mid-July.

- Intersection of 6 th and Westlake Avenue limited to one lane during work hours.

ELECTRICAL

Continue work related to street lighting, traffic signals, signal interconnect work and platform electrical services.

STREET IMPROVEMENTS

Start work related to grinding and Repaving Westlake Avenue between Olive Way and Denny Street . Start date last week of July to be determined.

SOUTH LAKE UNION AREA

Achieved substantial completion for advanced utility work related to the Seattle Streetcar Project.

Achieved substantial completion for track installation on Westlake Avenue and Terry Avenue between Denny and Mercer.

TRACK INSTALLATION

Start Track installation in Valley Street railbank

Duration: June 28 th – mid-August

Complete installation of Westlake/Mercer platform.

Westlake/Mercer platform

  • Complete by early July

Install Streetcar track switch on Fairview Avenue North near Yale Street

  • Duration: Complete early July
  • Traffic control: Fairview Avenue limited to one lane in each direction near construction zone.

Complete Grind & Overlay on Westlake Avenue between Harrison Street and

Mercer Street

  • Duration: Grind completed by July 9th. Overlay completed night of July 10 th or 11th
  • Traffic Control: At least one lane of traffic will be maintained near construction zone.

STREET IMPROVEMENTS

SW Curb at Mercer Street and Westlake Avenue

  • Duration: Complete early July
  • Traffic Control: Pedestrian traffic routed to north side of Mercer Street .

SW Curb at Harrison Street and Westlake Avenue

  • Duration: Complete early July
  • Traffic Control: Pedestrian traffic maintained.

MAINTENANCE FACILITY

Constructed the foundations, excavated maintenance pit, erected concrete walls.
