Montlake Bridge

The Montlake Bridge, links the University District with the Montlake and Capitol Hill communities and is the first of the Lake Washington Ship Canal Bridges to be passed on the way to the Puget Sound from Lake Washington. State-owned, the Montlake Bridge celebrated its 70th anniversary in 1995. The bridge is 344 feet long, and was designed by Carl Gould, one of the original architects of the University of Washington. After designing the master plan of University of Washington's collegiate gothic style, Gould designed the control towers of the Montlake Bridge, thus blending the bridge with the local community and making it a historical landmark. Today, the Montlake Bridge is celebrated as the site of boating season's "Opening Day" festivities each May. The Montlake Bridge is owned, operated and maintained by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).
