Project Overview
As part of its 2010 Arterial Asphalt and Concrete (AAC) Program, the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is planning to repave a section of 16th Avenue SW in the West Seattle neighborhood near the South Seattle Community College during the summer and fall of 2010. The project location is 16th Avenue SW from SW Brandon Street to SW Dawson Street.
SDOT will be extending work began last year, further improving 16th Avenue SW. In 2009, the roadway was reconstructed and widened between SW Findlay and SW Brandon streets.
The 2010 work is planned for this summer between mid-July and mid-September when fewer students attend the South Seattle Community College and traffic volumes are lower.
The paving project is funded by the “Bridging the Gap” transportation levy approved by Seattle voters in November 2006.
Specific Improvements Include:
- Reconstructing the roadway, making for a much smoother and safer street.
- Building a new sidewalk and curb on the west side of the street
- Installing a new storm water detention system to improve storm drainage capacity
What to Expect During Construction:
- Lane closures (during construction, northbound vehicle traffic will not be allowed past SW Brandon Street)
- Pedestrian and vehicle detours (northbound through traffic will be detoured via Dunmar Way SW/SW Orchard St and Delridge Way SW)
- Parking restrictions
- Construction noise and dust
- Instances of weekday, weekend and night work
- Regular notices with more specific information during construction
- Some of this work is weather dependant, and the schedule may be adjusted as the project moves forward
Bus Service Impacts During Construction:
- During the detour the southbound bus route 125 will continue to travel through the construction zone. The northbound bus route 125 will go as far north as the SCCC campus up until 10:18 pm daily in the evening. After that the route will only go as far north as SW Orchard Street.
