Officers from the Seattle Police Department will be onsite at the intersection of Mercer St. and Fairview Ave. N to facilitate traffic flow. Immediately following the signal head adjustment at the intersection of Mercer St. and Fairview Ave. N, northbound traffic on Fairview Ave. N will be shifted from the west side of the street to the east side as crews complete utility installation, install streetlights and rebuild the roadway and sidewalks between Mercer St. and Harrison St. Access to businesses and driveways on the west side of Fairview will be maintained during this work. Please note, the crosswalk at Fairview Ave. N and Republican St. will remain open to east/west pedestrian traffic as much as possible during construction. If a closure of the crosswalk is necessary in order to maintain safety, advanced notice will be given. Temporary lane restrictions on 9th Ave. N and Valley St. beginning Wednesday, November 28: Temporary lane restrictions will occur on 9th Ave. N and Valley St. beginning November 29th through mid-December to accommodate removal of overhead transmission lines and poles. Closures will occur intermittently as follows:
During these lane restrictions traffic will be routed around the work zone and uniformed police officers will be onsite at affected intersections to facilitate traffic flow. Temporary nighttime closure of Fairview Ave. N between Mercer St. and Valley St. on Thursday, October 25 SDOT announces a temporary nighttime closure of Fairview Ave. N between Mercer St. and Valley St. on Thursday, October 25, to accommodate underground water main work. Temporary lane restrictions on Sunday, October 21, for artwork installation To accommodate artwork installation in the median of the roadway, SDOT will temporarily close lanes on Mercer St. on Sunday, October 21. Mercer St. will have one eastbound lane and two westbound lanes closed between Fairview Ave. N and Terry Ave. N from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. while work is being completed. Nighttime single-lane closures on I-5 on- and off-ramps at Mercer St. beginning Thursday, October 4 Intermittent nighttime single-lane closures will be implemented on the I-5 on- and off-ramps at Mercer St. beginning Thursday, October 4 for approximately one week. Lane closures are expected to be weeknights, from 7:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Please note: No work will occur during the weekend of October 5-7. These overnight single-lane closures accommodate sign bridge foundation installation and median work on the I-5 on- and off-ramps necessary for completing the final configuration of the intersection at Mercer St. and Fairview Ave. N. Temporary lane revision on westbound Mercer St. west of 9th Ave. N Beginning Thursday, September 27, and continuing for approximately two weeks, westbound Mercer St. lanes will be routed around a small construction work zone west of 9th Ave. N. Both westbound lanes of Mercer St. will remain open to traffic during this work. This lane revision accommodates electrical cable installations. Next full weekend closure of I-5 on- and off-ramps at Mercer St. scheduled for September 21 - 24 A full weekend closure will occur the following weekend in September:
Closure hours are scheduled to begin Friday at 11:00 p.m. to Monday at 5:00 a.m. Please note that work is dependent on weather and availability of materials and is subject to cancelation. Detour route maps are available to and from I-5: Detour routes will be signed on roadways and may be heavily used, particularly Denny Way both eastbound and westbound. Travelers are advised to consider alternate routes to their destinations such as SR 99 or alternate I-5 exits and entrances. During the weekend closure, Valley St. will be re-opened to two-way traffic between Westlake Ave. N and Fairview Ave. N, but will revert back to no westbound through-access to Fairview Ave. N on Monday morning at 5:00 a.m. Please note that all South Lake Union businesses will remain open and will be accessible via alternative routes. During these closures, the I-5 on-ramp at University St. will be concurrently closed to provide more efficient traffic flow around the closed Mercer St. exit lane. Fairview Ave. N will also be closed between Mercer St. and Valley St. and Mercer St. will be closed to through traffic between Westlake Ave. N and Fairview Ave. N. All detour routes will be clearly marked to support traffic flow around the closures. Temporary pedestrian and bicycle route revisions along Fairview Ave. N and Valley St., beginning September 18 Pedestrian and bicycle detour routing will shift to the southeast side of Fairview Ave. N between Aloha St. and Boren Ave. N beginning September 18 for up to six weeks. This revision will accommodate underground electrical installations near the intersection of Fairview Ave. N and Valley St. which requires the existing single southbound lane of vehicle traffic on Fairview Ave. N to be shifted to the east to maintain safety for travelers. Pedestrians and bicyclists will be directed to the southeast side of Fairview Ave. N between Aloha St. and Valley St., and to use the coned pathway through the work zone at the intersection of Fairview Ave. N and Valley St. to continue westbound on Valley St. See the construction flyer for additional detail. Mercer and Dexter intersection enhanced to address drivers blocking To address the problem of drivers blocking the intersection and preventing traffic from moving, SDOT striped the Mercer St. and Dexter Ave. N intersection, and hung more noticeable overhead warning signs. The Mercer East project is additionally deploying uniformed police officers at the intersection on Monday, September 17, from 7:00-11:00 a.m. and from 3:00-7:00 p.m. to reinforce the law’s requirements with noncompliant drivers. With Mercer East project construction continuing through summer 2013 and major roads like Fairview Ave. N currently closed, the street modifications will help prevent drivers from “blocking hte box” and aid traffic in moving along the corridor. SDOT continues to monitor and adjust the signal timing through the corridor to best support all traffic flow.
Due to the scheduled partial shutdown of the city Data Center over the Labor Day weekend, the Mercer Corridor Project email address (mercerinfo@seattle.gov) will not be functional between Friday, August 31, and Monday, September 3. If you have questions about the Mercer Corridor Project during that time, please call the 24-hour construction hotline at 206-419-5818. Bumbershoot traffic use westbound Mercer St. to reach Seattle Center Mercer St. opens to two-way traffic on August 27 In a major step towards solving the decades- long “Mercer Mess,” SDOT announces that Mercer St. will open to two-way traffic on August 27 following the full weekend closure of the I-5 on- and off-ramps on August 24-27. While significant work remains on Fairview Ave. N and Valley St., by achieving this major milestone the Mercer Corridor Project (East Phase) will move into its third stage, continuing progress toward final completion next summer. Full weekend closure of I-5 on- and off-ramps at Mercer St. August 24-27 During the next full weekend closure of the I-5 on- and off-ramps at Mercer St., crews will complete the final work necessary for opening Mercer St. to two-way traffic, including concrete pavement, lane striping and signal installation. Ramp closure hours will be from Friday at 11:00 p.m. to Monday at 5:00 a.m. Detour routes shown will be signed on roadways and may be heavily used, particularly Denny Way both eastbound and westbound. During these closures, the I-5 on-ramp at University St. will be concurrently closed to provide more efficient traffic flow around the closed Mercer St. exit lane. Fairview Ave. N will also be closed between Mercer St. and Valley St., and Mercer St. will be closed to through traffic between Westlake Ave. N and Fairview Ave. N. All detour routes will be clearly marked. Mercer St. opens to two-way traffic; Stage 3 Fairview Ave. N restrictions begin August 27 Mercer St. will open to two-way traffic immediately following the full weekend closure of the I-5 on- and off-ramps at Mercer St. The new roadway will then accommodate three lanes of westbound traffic that will travel straight off the I-5 off-ramps. Eastbound Mercer St. will maintain three lanes onto the I-5 on-ramps, in addition to a left turn lane onto northbound Fairview Ave. N and travel across Fairview Ave. N that allows eastbound access to Eastlake and Capitol Hill.
This temporary configuration will be maintained during Stage 3 of construction as crews complete work on Fairview Ave. N and Valley St. The work includes: undergrounding of electrical distribution, transmission and communication lines; replacement or relocation of water, sewer, and storm drainage systems; relocation of gas lines; widening Fairview Ave. N between Republican St. and Valley St.; and the installation of new pavement, sidewalks, signals, lighting, signage, intelligent transportation systems, landscaping and urban design features. Stage 3 is anticipated to continue through early 2013. Impacts to transportation services Due to construction on Fairview Ave. N, King County Metro Transit will temporarily reroute Routes 70/71/72/73, 83 and 309 beginning 7:00 p.m. Friday, August 24. Buses will shift their routes off of Fairview Ave. N and travel instead on Eastlake Avenue N. A map of the reroute plan is on the King County Metro Transit website. Also note that, unlike past weekend ramp closures, this closure will require the Seattle Streetcar to be shut down in order to accommodate the undertaking of opening Mercer to two-way operations and progress the project into Stage 3 construction. The Streetcar closure hours are to begin on Friday evening at 11:00 p.m. and extend to Monday morning at 5:00 a.m. In lieu of a full weekend closure of the I-5 on- and off-ramps at Mercer St., Fairview Ave. N will be fully closed between Mercer St. and Republican St. August 10 - 13. This less extensive weekend closure accommodates concrete panel replacement in preparation for opening Mercer St. to two-way traffic in late summer or early fall of this year. Traffic coming from the I-5 off-ramps at Mercer St. will be directed north via Valley St. No access to southbound Fairview Ave. N from the I-5 off-ramps at Mercer St. will be permitted during the closure. Closure hours will be from Friday at 7:30 p.m. to Monday at 5:00 a.m. Please note the I-5 on- and off-ramps at Mercer St. will remain open at all times. On Thursday, August 9, crews will conduct preliminary survey work necessary for the weekend Fairview closure. Fairview Ave. N will be fully closed between Mercer and Republican streets the evening of Thursday, August 9, from 7:30 p.m. to Friday at 5:00 a.m. Fairview Ave. N will be fully open during the day on Friday, August 10. SDOT announces a major milestone for the Mercer Corridor Project, as two-way traffic on Mercer St. approaches SDOT will reach a major milestone in late summer or early fall this year when westbound lanes on Mercer St. are opened to travelers and Mercer St. accommodates two-way traffic for the very first time. In 2010, the City of Seattle received $30 million from a federal Transportation Investments Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Grant, completing the City’s project funding package and allowing the City to move forward with transforming Mercer St. into a widened, two-way boulevard, linking South Lake Union, the Seattle Center and a host of neighborhoods and businesses to the rest of the Puget Sound region. Construction to date has included:
Stage 3 of Mercer East to Begin Following Mercer St. Opening to Two-Way Traffic Stage 3 of Mercer Corridor Project construction will commence immediately following a weekend closure of the I-5 on- and off-ramps at Mercer St. required in order to accommodate the opening of two-way traffic on Mercer St. During this phase, Mercer St. will accommodate three lanes of new westbound traffic that will continue straight off the Mercer St. I-5 off-ramps. Eastbound Mercer St. will maintain three lanes onto the I-5 on-ramps, in addition to a left turn lane onto northbound Fairview Ave. N and a through lane across Fairview Ave. N to Mercer St. to allow for eastbound access to Eastlake and Capitol Hill.
Two-way Mercer St. Detour Map This temporary configuration will be maintained during Stage 3 of construction as crews complete work on Fairview Ave. N and Valley St. including undergrounding of, electrical distribution, transmission and communication lines, replacement or relocation of water, sewer, and storm drainage systems, relocation of gas lines, widening Fairview Ave. N between Republican St. and Valley St., installation of new pavement (including bike lanes), sidewalks, signals, lighting, signage, intelligent transportation systems, landscaping, and urban design features. Stage 3 is anticipated to continue through early 2013. SDOT will announce the traffic switch date as soon as it is confirmed.
