Pedestrian Crossing Flags

SDOT receives periodic requests from neighborhoods to implement a system of crossing flags at marked crosswalks. SDOT has historically not implemented such a system due to insufficient funding for maintenance. However, SDOT received funding in 2008 from the Seattle City Council for pedestrian safety with specific direction to launch a pilot program measuring the effectiveness of pedestrian crossing flags at crosswalks.

Currently, crossing flags and buckets have been installed at 17 crosswalks throughout the city. We expect to make initial decisions about this program in late fall. The pilot program will measure the increase in pedestrian safety through motorist compliance, collision data, and pedestrian volumes against the cost of maintaining the program.
