School Traffic Management

Traffic around schools at drop off and pick up times can sometimes be chaotic.  The drop-off and pick-up process must be safe and efficient for students and parents arriving by bus or private motor vehicle, as well as those who arrive on foot and bicycle.  The chaotic traffic patterns around some schools can be a perceived barrier for some parents to allow their children to walk or bicycle to school.  This often results in more parents driving their children to school which adds to the extra congestion and safety problems at the school, creating a cycle of more traffic problems and less walking.  Better organized and safer traffic conditions can ease concerns about traffic, and make parents more willing to allow their children to walk or bicycle.

SDOT is a member of the Seattle School Traffic Safety Committee.  This committee can help evaluate traffic conditions around schools and recommend possible solutions to improve traffic around schools during peak hours.  To request the School Traffic Safety Committee examine your school site and recommend improvements, complete the following online form.
