Safe Routes to School: Focus School Program Many Seattle Schools lack the basic infrastructure necessary for safe walking and bicycling. And many safety issues can be solved through educational efforts. Focus Schools receive up to $70,000 for major improvement projects and enhanced safety education, enforcement and encouragement efforts. SDOT selects three to five schools per year to become Focus Schools and all accredited public schools with K thru 5 programs are eligible for this program. SDOT faces tough decisions when choosing Focus Schools. Each school has its own distinct needs ranging from new sidewalks to street crossing improvements. SDOT is currently developing criteria for selecting Focus Schools intended to address a variety of infrastructure needs throughout the city. Check back soon for updates. What to expect if your school is selected as a Focus School SDOT will work with students, parents, and staff to learn about barriers to walking & biking to school. Potential projects to improve the pedestrian and bicycle environments around schools will be determined during the winter months. Several meetings will be held to plan and review proposed projects. Construction of the improvements will occur in summer. Focus Schools also receive increased education, encouragement, and enforcement efforts at and around the school For more information contact SDOT Safe Routes to School Coordinator Brian Dougherty at 206-684-5124 or brian.dougherty@seattle.gov
