2010 Arterial Paving Project: S Dearborn Street Fifth Ave S to 10th Ave S

Project Update – July 23, 2010

Construction to Reach Substantial Completion by End of July

Construction crews will wrap up work on the S Dearborn Street Repaving project the week of July 26-30 after almost two months of construction on the arterial.

On Tuesday night, July 27, construction crews will close the southbound I-5 Off-ramp to S Dearborn Street for several hours between 9:00 PM and 5:00 AM in order to install final pavement markings for crosswalks and traffic symbols on S Dearborn Street.

This work will bring the repaving project to substantial completion.

Project Update – May 10, 2010

Construction  Kick Off Date Changed To June 7, 2010

After a more detailed assessment of special events and traffic impacts, the contractor has requested, and been approved by the City, to start construction work on S Dearborn Street the week of June 7 instead of May 17.

The project will be substantially complete in mid-July.  However, the construction schedule is weather dependent.

Traffic Impacts

During construction, there will be lane closures, but at least one lane on S Dearborn Street  will be open for traffic at all times in both directions.  Some temporary side street closures and traffic restrictions will be necessary.

Project Overview

SDOT will construct pavement maintenance improvements on S Dearborn Street from Fifth Avenue S to 10th Avenue S.

The paving project is funded by the “Bridging the Gap” transportation levy approved by Seattle voters in November 2006.

The Dearborn Street project will include base repair, pavement overlay, curb replacement, signal detector loop replacement, pavement striping, minor drainage improvements, utility adjustments, reconstruction of pedestrian and traffic islands, and completion of ADA curb ramp reconstruction.   Most of the curb ramp reconstruction and retrofits were completed last year by city crews. Some bike improvements (click here for more information) will also be included.

Construction is scheduled to start May 17, 2010 and be completed in July 2010.

What to Expect During Work

  • Lane closures
  • Pedestrian and vehicle detours
  • Parking and loading restrictions
  • Construction noise and dust
  • Instances of weekday, weekend and night work
  • Regular notices with more location specific information during construction
  • Some of this work is weather dependent, and the schedule may be adjusted as the project moves forward

Bike Improvements

The project will include at least the following improvements for bicyclists:

  • Install bike friendly drainage grates
  • Install bike sensitive traffic detectors at traffic signals
  • Widen bike lanes where possible.  Some sections of the bike lanes along Dearborn Street will be extended from 4 feet to 4.5 or 5 feet.
