Link light rail station neighborhood parking plans: Stadium & Sodo

Updated October 12, 2009

LINK light rail trains started running through SODO and Stadium stations on July 18. Click here for info on how to ride the train.

Project Update: While trains are running, a parking management plan has not yet been determined for SODO and Stadium station areas. Before and after train service begins, staff will be collecting parking use data to help measure the impact of light rail on parking.

*Implementation will be based on data findings and community support for recommended option

To prioritize on-street parking around the SODO and Stadium light rail stations for employees near those station areas, SDOT continues to work with businesses to determine what types of changes might take place. One option is a restricted parking zone (RPZ). A new RPZ business pilot program is now available only to the 7 new light rail station areas.

Restricted Parking Zone (RPZ)Option

City Council recently changed the RPZ policy to allow for an optional 4-year business permit pilot project only in the 7 new light rail station areas. Click here for more info on the RPZ policy changes.

Businesses would be eligible for employee permits:

  • First 2 at no cost, additional permits $45/each (good for 2 yrs)
  • 1 permit per employee
  • 1 guest permit at no cost, can get a 2 nd for $15

While work is proceeding and SDOT is in communication with various stakeholders, the pilot project will not be in place before light rail service begins in July. SDOT will continue door-to-door outreach through the summer.

Let SDOT know how you feel about this option: email LightRailParking@seattle.gov or call (206) 684-8186

Community Meetings:

  • Rotary Club of SODO in August 2009
  • Duwamish TMA in June 2009
  • SDOT Open House at Starbuck’s Mezza Café in Jan 2009
  • Duwamish TMA in August 2008
  • Email  lightrailparking@seattle.gov  to invite us to your next meeting!

Project Background

A mailer inviting public input was sent to all addresses within ½ mile of the Stadium and Sodo station areas in December 2008.

Stadium and Sodo Parking Utilization Data

Throughout fall 2008, SDOT collected information about utilization, which is how many cars are parked on the streets around the light rail stations. This information, summarized in the Link Station Area Parking Study, is being used two ways: to help design proposals to manage on-street parking and to create a baseline that on-street parking conditions can be compared to in the future.

Email lightrailparking@seattle.gov for additional information.
