Link light rail station neighborhood parking plans: Rainier Beach

In July 2009, SDOT installed a new restricted parking zone (RPZ), Zone 31, around the Rainier Beach station area to support business and residential parking needs.

In 2010, SDOT conducted a follow-up parking study to see whether on-street parking use changed. Read the 2010 report here.

Zone 31 RPZ permits

Zone 31 permits expire on August 31, 2011. If you received a permit within the past two years, SDOT will send you a formal renewal notice in the mail.

If you do not have a permit, click here for a permit application.

RPZ permits are good for a 2-year cycle. Decals are $65, a guest permit is $30, and low-income permits are available for $10. Learn more about permit fees and how to apply for a low-income permit.

Zone 31 Facts

• The Rainier Beach station area RPZ is Zone 31
• The hours of the zone are Monday-Friday, 7am-6pm
• Most vehicles can stay up to two hours without a permit; in some locations a four-hour time limit is being installed at the request of nearby businesses

Community Input Incorporated Into Light Rail Parking Plans

• The ideas and concerns of residents and employees around the southeast light rail stations were critical to developing this parking management plan
• In response to community comments, here are changes from the   December 2008 draft proposal :
• The Zone will be installed as originally proposed.
• S Fairbanks Street and S Valdez Street will be included in the Zone and will be monitored closely to ensure that the proposed regulations protect adequate parking for residents.

2008 parking data

Throughout fall 2008, SDOT collected information about utilization, which is how many cars are parked on the streets around the light rail stations. This information, summarized in the   Link Station Area Parking Study , is being used two ways: to help design proposals to manage on-street parking and to create a baseline that on-street parking conditions can be compared to in the future.
