University Link Light Rail Construction Street
improvements to keep Seattle Moving

Construction on the University Link portion of light rail is underway. The ground beneath I-5 is being prepared for a tunnel boring machine (TBM) that will dig light rail tunnels between Capitol Hill and Downtown Seattle. As a result, the Olive Way off-ramp from northbound I-5 is closed to traffic for about one year.

To minimize impacts to local streets, SDOT and Sound Transit invested $840,000 on the following:

  • Changed signal timing at 40 intersections along the following corridors:
    • James Street from Sixth Avenue to Broadway
    • Boren Avenue from Stewart Street to Broadway
    • Madison Street from Sixth Avenue to Broadway
  • Installed two temporary traffic signals at:
    • Seventh Avenue and Spring Street
    • Seventh Avenue and Seneca Street
  • Modified traffic signals at 17 intersections for emergency vehicles
  • Installed two new traffic cameras to monitor traffic at:
    • Seventh Avenue and Pike Street
    • Eighth Avenue and Olive Way
