Greenwood Ave N

Updated: April 8, 2020

What’s happening now?

Starting as soon as April 8th, we will begin repaving Greenwood Ave N between N 136th St to N 145th St. This is the final phase of this safety improvement project that we've been working on since last fall. We'll start with replacing full depth asphalt near the curb and gutter, then mill the top layer of the roadway, and finish with the overlay of asphalt on top. Final channelization will occur 21 days after the overlay as the asphalt needs to cure before application of the markings. This work is expected to last 4-6 weeks and is weather dependent.

Here's what you can expect during construction:

  • Construction noise, dust, and vibration
  • On-street parking restrictions near work zones
  • Periodic traffic detours to nearby arterials
  • Vehicle lane shifts around work zones
  • Detours around the work zone for people walking and biking. (All sidewalks will be open except when asphalt is placed on the cross streets at 143rd, 137th, & 136th)
  • Partial street closures, often near intersections
  • One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained as often as feasible
  • Restricted access to residential driveways; advance notice will be provided
  • Flaggers to help direct traffic
  • Equipment, trucks, and crews in the area

Project Overview

We are working to repave Greenwood Ave N between N 137th and N 145th streets, as well as adding sidewalks, curbs, and parking strips where they don't presently exist. Other improvements will include Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps at each intersection in the project area, pedestrian signal improvements at N 145th St, and a new traffic signal at N 137th St. These improvements will help achieve Seattle's Vision Zero goal to end all traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2030.

The first phase of the project was completed in 2018 and installed a new sidewalk, planting strip, curb, and gutter on the east side of Greenwood Ave N. Crews also installed a new pedestrian-activated traffic signal at N 137th St. The second phase of the project was completed in March 2020 and included construction of a new sidewalk, planting strip, curb and gutter on the west side of Greenwood Ave N between N 136th and N 145th streets. Crews will return for the final phase of the project, beginning as soon as April 8th, to pave the entire roadway on Greenwood.

State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) Review

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) has determined that the Greenwood Avenue N Pedestrian Improvements Project will not have a probable significant adverse impact on the environment. As a result, SDOT issued a Determination of Non-significance (DNS) on June 25, 2018. This decision was made after review of a completed environmental checklist.
