Traffic Signal
Project Update – October 21, 2010
The contractor working for SDOT has started work on installing a new traffic signal at the intersection of First Avenue S and S Massachusetts Street. The initial work has concentrated on removal of roadway and sidewalk sections.
Remaining Construction Schedule
- Week of October 18-22: Mostly trenching and other underground work. Traffic restrictions include intermittent travel and parking lane closures (one travel lane in each direction) approaching the intersection 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM daily.
- Week of October 25-29: Mostly concrete restoration in the roadway and sidewalks; hanging span wire for traffic signal; and installing traffic detector devices (a.k.a. traffic signal loops). Traffic restrictions include intermittent travel and parking lane closures (one travel lane in each direction) approaching the intersection 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM daily.
Night work will occur 7:00 PM to 4:00 AM. For night time span wire work, right lanes will be closed with flaggers assisting traffic; for night time traffic signal loops right then left lanes will be closed.
- Week of November 1-5 & 8-12: Wrap up work including installing signal equipment, pedestrian signal poles and crosswalk striping. Traffic restrictions include intermittent travel and parking lane closures (one travel lane in each direction) approaching the intersection 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM daily.

PROJECT OVERVIEW
Project Description
This project will install a new traffic signal at the intersection of First Avenue S and S Massachusetts Street.
The project will include
- concrete removal and restoration of sidewalks and roadway pavement on all four corners of the intersection
- trenching and installation of pedestrian signal poles and a signal controller cabinet
The purpose of the project is to help mitigate traffic changes in the area as a result of construction of the Alaskan Way Viaduct and Seawall Replacement Program.
Project Schedule
- September 27, 2010 – November 15, 2010
- September 27 to Oct 3 - - start of construction/contractor secures equipment
- October 4 to October 14 - - concrete removal, trenching, underground work
- October 15 to November 15 - - installation of wiring, signal poles, signal heads, and controller cabinet; restoration work
- November 15, 2010 - - project substantially complete

- Moderate construction noise and dust
- Normal work hours of 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
