Downtown Transportation Study

Project Description

The Downtown Transportation Study ("the study") will produce a long-range plan to keep Downtown moving for the next 20 years. Downtown is expected to see considerable growth over the next several decades – and with it significant demands on our transportation system.

Project Goals

The study is guided by the goals and policies of the Comprehensive Plan and Transportation Strategic Plan with an emphasis on moving people and goods. The study focuses on improving transit to and within downtown, making walking and bicyling more convenient choices, and addressing chokepoints for cars and trucks.

The study – much like the South Lake Union Transportation Study and the Northgate Coordinated Transportation Investment Plan – is a blueprint to guide both public and private transportation investments through 2030. These investments will make better land use and transportation choices possible , and ensure maximum benefit to the City as a whole.

Study Scope

The study will:

  • build on prior transportation work
  • anticipate transportation issues and needs related to new commercial and residential growth
  • balance the needs of bikes, pedestrians, transit, autos and trucks
  • prioritize a list of improvements with preliminary cost estimates
  • identify potential revenue sources
  • provide a comprehensive approach to environmental review for new development

The study forecasts conditions through year 2030 for all types of transportation and identifies improvements needed to accommodate growth and meet the City's overall transportation and land use goals.
