Denny, Dexter, and Mercer Repaving Project

The Citys Arterial Asphalt and Concrete Program resurfaces a number of streets each year. Denny Way, Dexter Avenue N, and Mercer Street are scheduled for 2007. This project is funded by the "Bridging the Gap" Transportation Initiative approved by Seattle voters in November 2006.

As of Friday, August 24th, the project reached substantial completion. The only work remaining, if any, would be minor corrections to work already done.

July 27, 2007 Update on the Denny Way/Dexter Avenue N/ Mercer Street Paving Project

Denny Way ( 1st Avenue N to 9th Avenue N )

Construction crews have completed paving Denny Way and are now working on installing traffic detector loops and new curb ramps, as well as upgrading existing curb ramps. The work will be taking place over the next two weeks. Work on individual curb ramps will take two to three days each, and require partial closure of adjacent traffic lanes and curb and sidewalk areas. Pedestrian access will be maintained to businesses and residences.

All lanes of traffic will be open from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM , and 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM , Monday through Friday. Traffic may be reduced to one lane in each direction at other times.

Mercer Street ( Queen Anne Avenue N to 5th Avenue N )

Pavement striping is scheduled to take place the first week in August and may take approximately two to three days to complete. Traffic may be restricted to specific lanes during the lane markings.

Dexter Avenue N (Denny Way to Mercer Street )

Minor work in spot locations is scheduled for completion the first week in August.

  • Business access will be maintained
  • Bicyclist traffic may have to merge with vehicular traffic. Appropriate signs will be posted.

July 18, 2007 Denny/Dexter Traffic Advisory

(Seattle) - Overnight July 19 construction crews are scheduled to finish paving Denny Way from Dexter Ave. to Westlake Ave. The work is set to begin at 7 p.m. and is expected to be finished by 6 a.m. the next morning, July 20th. The work is weather dependent so rain Thursday night may cause a delay.

Dexter Avenue N, between Republican Street and Mercer Street, will be used as a staging area for construction equipment and materials. Traffic will likely be reduced to one lane in each direction during transfer of construction materials. The northbound bike lane on Dexter will also be affected. Flange and uniformed police officers will be used for traffic control. Staging the material on Dexter will allow the contractor to take up less space on Denny Way.

Current construction on Denny Way includes repair of the roadway base, installation of traffic signal detector loops, and adjustments to utility (manhole) castings. All lanes of traffic on Denny will be open during rush hour, from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Traffic may be reduced to one lane in each direction at other times, including during the nighttime paving work.

The Denny/Dexter/Mercer Street Paving project began on April 23, 2007. Improvements along Dexter are now complete and those on Mercer are wrapping up.
