California Ave SW at SW Alaska St and SW Oregon St

To improve pedestrian access across California Avenue SW , the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) installed two raised mid-block marked crosswalks in the West Seattle Junction, one south of SW Alaska Street and one south of SW Oregon Street .

A recent paving project on California Avenue SW identified these two crosswalks that did not meet SDOT's guidelines for placement of a marked crosswalk. In response to community input, SDOT committed to the following:

  • The mid-block marked crosswalks would not be removed
  • Four lanes of motor vehicle traffic would be maintained
  • The pedestrian all-walk signal would be maintained at SW Alaska Street

SDOT considered both the installation of a pedestrian traffic signal at each marked crosswalk and raised crosswalks, which raise the crosswalk to the same level as the sidewalk and create a speed table for vehicles to go over (a more gradual version of a speed bump).

SDOT asked for additional community input in deciding between these two options. Over 100 residents responded, with 91% favoring the raised crosswalk.
