South Columbian Way Repaving Project Substantially Complete
The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) and its contractor have substantially completed the project to repave South Columbian Way between Beacon Avenue South and 15th Avenue South. The repaving work included the planting of nearly 100 new trees, which now line the street, as well as new curb ramps; new bike lanes; a new two-way center turn-lane; and a new dedicated right-turn lane into the Seattle VA Medical Center.  The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) repaved S Columbian Way between Beacon Ave S and 15th Ave S in 2010. This project was funded by the “Bridging the Gap” transportation levy approved by Seattle voters. The contractor, Dennis R. Craig Construction, started work on the project in mid May and reached substantial completion in early November.
Project elements included:
- Repaving the street
- Installing new curb
- Improving drainage
- Constructing new curb ramps at intersections
to improve pedestrian access
- Planting trees
This segment of Columbian Way S was also restriped as part of the project, resulting in:
- One lane of motor vehicle traffic in each direction
- A new two-way center turn lane
- New bike lanes
- A new dedicated right-turn lane at VA Hospital
Drive to improve access to the medical center
The new configuration will improve motor vehicle safety and access, pedestrian access and bicycle usage.
