What’s happening on Columbia Street

When the Transit Tunnel reopens, several bus routes using the Alaskan Way Viaduct will directly access Third Avenue to take advantage of transit priority operating during peak-commute hours. The changes described below will start in early September.

Improvements

• Add a new in-lane bus zone on Columbia Street between Second and Third avenues
• Install pedestrian countdown signals at the Third Avenue and Columbia Street crosswalks

Benefits

• Improve speed and reliability of buses
• Enhance pedestrian safety
• Shorten walking distance for passengers coming from south of Columbia Street
• Reduce congestion on Second Avenue
