Car Free Day Activities
A fun, affordable, healthy way to enjoy our streets

Since we were kids we’ve been told to stay out of the streets. Car Free Day events are a way to find out what we could use our streets for if people walked, biked and took transit instead of driving.

Volunteering

SDOT is looking for volunteers to help monitor closed intersections and emergency lanes, and to make sure the Water Taxi Shuttle can safely move along Alki during the September 7 event. If you are interested in learning more about volunteer positions, contact SharonRockwood@hotmail.com

Playing in the street

You are encouraged to take advantage of these events to do something entertaining and creative. Below are a few ideas for having fun in the street:

  • Hold street game competitions like kickball, stickball, or touch football
  • Jump rope and Double Dutch
  • Practice roller skating
  • Practice martial arts, dancing, or yoga
  • Hold music lessons
  • Host book readings, or story time hours
  • Draw with sidewalk chalk
  • Give bike tune-ups, or hold helmet fittings
  • Move drill team and band practices to the street
  • Bring your living room outside
  • Hold a street sale instead of a sidewalk sale
  • Move your restaurant tables outdoors
  • Setup a chess tournament
  • Display your art
  • Organize bike rides
  • Strut Your Mut parades/competitions

If you are short on cash for your creative idea, check out Small Sparks a quick and easy way for neighbors to get up to $250 up-front funding to re-imagine your street.

Do you have other ideas? Email Dawn.Schellenberg@Seattle.gov and we will add them to the page.
