    Construction Update: April 18, 2007
California Avenue SW Paving On Schedule

The work between SW Genesee St and SW Spokane St (Phase 1, see below) has been progressing at a rapid pace. Currently, the contractor is approximately one week ahead of schedule.

This week, the contractor began installing new drainage inlets, making base repairs, and installing new/upgraded curb ramps and sidewalk on the west side of California Avenue SW. When complete, work will shift to the east side of the street. Preparations for final paving will begin later this month and final paving is scheduled for the first week of May, weather permitting.

    The following traffic restrictions apply:
    • Traffic will be maintained at all times throughout the project. During the peak periods (6-9AM and 4-6PM), at least one lane of traffic in each direction will be open.
    • At other times, traffic may be restricted to one lane with the use of flaggers.
    • Left turns on to, and off of, California Ave SW will be prohibited during the work until they can safely be restored.
    • During portions of the drainage work, several residential (side) streets will not have direct access to California Avenue SW. Local residents may have to drive around the block.
    • Parking will be prohibited as necessary to complete the work and provide safe, efficient traffic control.
The overall construction work on California Avenue SW and SW Admiral Way, will be constructed in phases that may overlap. We expect Phase 2 and 3 to be constructed concurrently. The same traffic and parking restrictions identified above will apply in each phase.

California Avenue SW Street Paving Work to Re-start in March

The planned removal and replacement of the asphalt pavement surface on California Avenue SW north of SW Genesee and on SW Admiral Way will take place in Spring 2007. Construction work will include installation of concrete curb ramps and drainage improvements. The segment between SW Edmunds and SW Genesse was paved last year. There was a pause in construction activity for the holiday season and winter.

Beginning on March 19th, the contractor will restart work on California Avenue SW between SW Genesee and SW Spokane streets. The following traffic restrictions will apply.
    • Traffic will be maintained at all times throughout the project. During the peak periods, at least one lane of traffic in each direction will be open.
    • At other times, traffic may be restricted to one lane with the use of flaggers.
    • There will be NO PARKING allowed for 24 hours a day (most of the time) for a duration of four (4) to five (5) weeks. This will be for grinding, then digging out and repairing the roadway base in the center section of the street.
    • For the remainder of the work, the parking will be prohibited as necessary.
    • Left turns will be largely prohibited from and onto intersecting residential (side) streets during the excavation of the center section of the roadway. Appropriate signage will be posted. Detours will be necessary at times.
The overall construction work on California Avenue SW and SW Admiral Way, will be constructed in phases that may overlap. The same traffic and parking restrictions identified above will be necessary in each phase.

Phase 1 -California Avenue SW from SW Genessee Street to SW Spokane Street
Phase 2 -California Avenue SW from SW Spokane Street to SW Admiral Way
Phase 3 -SW Admiral Way from 41st Avenue SW to SW Olga Street

Throughout the duration of the construction project, one lane of travel will be maintained in each direction during the hours of 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Normal work hours for the contractor will be 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Mid-Block Crosswalk Construction Continues on California Avenue SW

The contractor is continuing to work on the installation of raised crosswalks on California Avenue SW in the Junction area.

Work on the east half of the mid-block crosswalk between SW Edmunds and SW Alaska has been completed. This entire mid-block crosswalk should be completed within the next two weeks.

The contractor plans to complete work on the east half of the mid-block crosswalk between SW Alaska and SW Genesee by the middle of next week. This entire mid-block crosswalk should be completed by the middle of November 2006.

The raised crosswalks are being constructed in concrete which means the work must be done in phases. This, in combination with the detailed work required to upgrade curb ramps to meet current standards and our efforts to preserve as many decorative features as possible, requires a significant amount of time.

Some parking will be prohibited in the vicinity of each crosswalk for the duration of the work. We expect the parking loss to be much less than what was required for the preceding roadwork. Please keep in mind that some parking may be restricted for the purposes of maintaining safe, effective traffic control.

Throughout the duration of this work, one lane of travel will be maintained in each direction during the hours of 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. At other times, traffic may be restricted to one lane with the use of flaggers. Normal work hours for the contractor will be 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

The planned removal and replacement of the asphalt pavement surface on California Avenue SW north of SW Genesee and on SW Admiral Way will take place in Spring 2007.

Construction Started This Week on Improving Mid-Block Crosswalks on California Avenue SW

Raised crosswalks were recently chosen by the community as the preferred option to improve safety at the mid-block marked crosswalks in the Junction. Although this decision was made after the paving project was awarded, we were able to negotiate with our contractor, Gary Merlino, to incorporate this work into their existing contract. This work began Monday, October 16th.

The work will include raising the existing mid-block crosswalks to create a speed reducing "table" for vehicles to go over. The speed table is a more gradual version of a speed bump.

The raised crosswalks will be constructed in concrete and that means the work must be done in phases. This, in combination with the detailed work required to upgrade the curb ramps to meet the current Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines and our efforts to preserve as many decorative features as possible, will require a significant amount of time. We expect each crosswalk to take 2-3 weeks to construct.

California Avenue SW to be Repaved Thursday and Friday

    • A new asphalt surface will be placed on California Avenue SW between SW Edmunds and SW Genesee streets this Thursday and Friday (weather permitting).
    • This work will require temporary closures and traffic detours away from the roadway's intersections with east-west streets (SW Alaska, SW Oregon, and SW Genesee).
    • Lane closures will be necessary and all parking will be prohibited along the three block stretch of California Avenue SW to maintain traffic control and safety while the paving work is underway.
    • Expect congested traffic at times. Police Officers, flaggers, and signage will be in the area directing traffic as necessary.
    Construction Update:
    October 5, 2006

SW Oregon Street has been temporarily closed to east-west traffic thru traffic to allow the contractor to complete concrete base repair work in the intersection with Caliornia Avenue SW.

The temporary traffic revision will be in place until next Thursday, October 12. Also, as part of this revision, traffic on SW Oregon Street will be forced to turn right at California Avenue SW.

    --Weekend Work Planned--

Work continues between SW Edmunds and SW Genesee Streets this week. Concrete base pavement will be placed in several locations this Saturday, September 30th. This concrete base pavement is necessary before the roadway can be re-paved with a new asphalt surface.

During the next two weeks, work will be taking place in all areas in preparation for final asphalt paving. Parking will be prohibited as necessary for this work. Please keep in mind that some parking may be restricted for the purposes of maintaining safe, effective traffic control.

    Upcoming work - October 2 thru 14

    • Continued excavation to replace concrete roadway base between SW Oregon and SW Genesee Streets. Some preliminary asphalt paving will take place to level the roadway base.
    • Excavation to replace concrete base in spot locations between SW Edmunds St and SW Oregon St.
    • Removal and replacement of concrete curb ramps at various locations between SW Genesee and SW Alaska Streets.
    • Installation of drainage system improvements between SW Genesee and SW Alaska Streets.
    • Re-paving of the roadway between SW Edmunds and SW Genesee Streets with a new asphalt surface. This is expected to occur near the end of the two (2) week period, weather permitting.
Throughout the duration of the construction project, one lane of travel will be maintained in each direction during the hours of 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. At other times, traffic may be restricted to one lane with the use of flaggers. Normal work hours for the contractor will be 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

    September 19, 2006
The grinding of the asphalt surface between SW Edmunds Street and SW Genesee Street has been completed! The contractor is now working diligently to repair the concrete roadway base beneath the asphalt pavement. However, it has become evident that a greater level of repair is required than previously anticipated. The center lanes between SW Edmunds and SW Alaska Streets will remain closed until asphalt can be placed over the concrete to level the roadway base. This work is necessary before final asphalt paving of the roadway surface takes place. SDOT and the contractor are working to schedule this work, which is weather dependent, as soon as possible. We recognize the inconvenience and are committed to completing this work as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience!

    Upcoming work - September 18 - 22
    • Continued repairs to the concrete roadway base in spot locations.
    • Removal and replacement of concrete curb ramps at various locations.
The re-paving of the roadway with a new asphalt surface is expected to occur within the next three (3) to five (5) weeks.

    September 7, 2006

The first significant work on the California Avenue SW Paving project will be the grinding of the existing asphalt roadway between SW Edmunds and SW Genesee streets.

    Specific Impacts:
    • No parking will be allowed on either side of the street during this work.
    • Two-way traffic will be maintained at all times. Vehicles may be routed along one side of the street while the grinding takes place on the other side.
    • This work will generate dust and noise with the contractor taking measures to minimize each.
Following completion of the asphalt surface grinding work, the contractor will remove and replace the concrete base that was underlying the old asphalt surface in spot locations, and then re-pave the roadway with a new asphalt surface. The process of grinding down the roadway, repairing the concrete base, constructing wheel chair curb ramps, and re-paving the roadway with a new asphalt surface will take approximately four (4) to six (6) weeks to complete.

For the grinding work, construction work hours will be 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Throughout the duration of the construction project, one lane of travel will be maintained in each direction during the hours of 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. At other times, traffic may be restricted to one lane with the use of flaggers. Normal work hours for the contractor will be 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
