An overview of the Neighborhood Street Fund program

The Neighborhood Street Fund Program pays for neighborhood transportation projects which are identified and prioritized by the community itself. The funds for this program come from the Bridging the Gap (BTG) transportation levy passed by voters in November 2006 which expires in 2015. The levy has $4.5 million in funds to cover planning, design and construction of a third (and final) round of projects.

Projects are considered if they are large, but not too large ($100,000 - $750,000), related to transportation, entirely on existing public right-of-way and have the support of their local neighborhood District Council. If needed, SDOT will refine the scope of the proposed project in consultation with the applicant. For example, an original project might assume building sidewalks on both sides of the street while the project purpose may be met with a sidewalk on only one side of the street, reducing the project cost and making funding more likely.
Of the 152 projects proposed in 2007, 17 were funded and built. Of the 37 projects that were considered in 2010, 9 were built by the end of 2012 and 2 more will be built by the end of 2013. Click here for more details about these funded projects.

In this third of three funding rounds from the BTG levy, the deadline for submitting applications to the Neighborhood Street Fund was 12/17/12 and each of the 13 District Councils selected 3 projects from their district by 1/31/13.

The 86 applications accepted are listed below, by District, and those selected for further evaluation are underlined. (Two projects were considered by two District Councils because they proposed improvements in both.)

NSF Project Selection Timeline:

2013

February - May – SDOT conducts a high level scope & cost estimate of the projects selected by the neighborhood District Councils.

June – Each neighborhood District Council prioritizes its own list of projects.

July – Bridging the Gap Oversight Committee evaluates all proposed projects for funding.

August – Oversight committee makes funding recommendations to the Mayor & City Council.

September – 2014 Budget adopted.

October/November – SDOT begins planning and design work.
