Contracting Opportunities

Upcoming safety and mobility improvements will repair or replace over half of the Alaskan Way Viaduct.
The Washington State Department of Transportation and the City of Seattle are moving forward with safety and mobility projects in the north and south ends of the Alaskan Way Viaduct corridor. Crews began construction on the first project in 2007, and work on the other improvements continues through 2012.

We are committed to increasing participation of Disadvantaged Business Enterprises and Women and Minority Business Enterprises (DBE/WMBE) in contracts for the Alaskan Way Viaduct and Seawall Replacement Program. Call for bids on the South Massachusetts Street to Railroad Way South Electrical Line Relocation

Be prepared for the next Moving Forward project

The Federal Highway Administration, Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), King County and the City of Seattleare preparing for construction on the next Moving Forward project. They have recently advertised the contract for the South Massachusetts Street to Railroad Way South Electrical Line Relocation Project, which will move electrical lines that are currently attached to the Alaskan Way Viaduct. WSDOT established a voluntary goal of eight percent for participation of certified minority- and women-owned business enterprises (MWBEs) for this contract.

The bid package includes the following information and can be found on WSDOT’s Contract Ad and Award Web page:

  • Project costs
  • Construction schedule
  • Voluntary goal for MWBE participation level
  • Requirement for apprenticeship program

Work for this project includes:

  • Excavation, shoring, and backfill of trenches
  • Construction of medium and high voltage concrete-encased (FTB) electrical duct banks
  • Contaminated/unsuitable soil excavation and disposal
  • Electrical vault installation
  • Procurement and installation of medium and high voltage electrical cable, to include splicing
  • Transition splicing of high voltage electrical lines
  • Substation termination of high voltage electrical lines
  • Water line relocation
  • Drainage
  • Pavement and site restoration
  • Erosion and sedimentation control
  • Traffic control for in-street work

The State and City are committed to creating and sustaining an equitable business environment for the Alaskan Way Viaduct and Seawall Replacement Program. Our goal is to ensure a high level of DBE/WMBE participation by providing timely information and access to tools, resources and support services.

Construction of the Moving Forward projects will continue through 2012. Please see the “Projects” section on our Web site for more information. As construction ramps up, the State and City plan to conduct outreach activities to encourage the participation of disadvantaged and minority- and women-owned businesses.
