Northgate 5th Avenue NE Improvements
Phase 2 NOW SUBSTANTIALLY COMPLETE!

Revised: July 9, 2010

New sidewalk, crosswalks and median along 5th Ave NE in Northgate

The Seattle Department of Transportations (SDOTs) contractor has now reached substantial completion on the project to improve 5th Ave NE, around the intersection with NE 112th. The project wrapped up ahead of schedule, enabling crews to fully open NE 112th St and 5th Ave NE prior to todays PM traffic peak. As of 2:30 p.m. today, drivers can use all of the north and southbound lanes of 5th Ave NE as well as access NE 112th Street from 5th Ave NE and vice versa.

The project focused on safety and creating a more pedestrian-friendly street, including new stamped concrete crosswalks along all three sides of the intersection of 5th Ave NE and NE 112th St. SDOTs contractor began construction May 24th. Crews removed old pavement to install a landscaped median; built stamped concrete cross walks; replaced a portion of a paved planting strip on the east side of 5th Ave NE with topsoil; and added new sidewalk and curb along the west side of 5th Ave NE, adjacent to the new Urban Center Park. Later this year landscaping and new street trees will also be added to the area.To complete this project, which called for 40 working days, 5th Ave NE between Northgate Way and NE 113th St had to be reduced to one lane in each direction from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and left turns onto NE 112th St from 5th Ave NE and vice versa had to be restricted.
