Seattle's Transit Master Plan

Keeping Seattle moving and reducing greenhouse gases

Third Avenue’s role in Seattle’s transportation network

In 2005, the City and Metro Transit committed to evaluating Third Avenue operations when the transit tunnel reopened. This spring, the two agencies determined that maintaining transit priority on Third Avenue during peak commute hours (6-9 a.m. and 3-6:30 p.m.) is the best choice to promote transit use and improve mobility in the Center City .

Motorists will continue having unlimited access 18 hours a day during weekday hours of 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., plus evenings, nights and weekends.

The upcoming Alaskan Way Viaduct projects and major projects like two-way Mercer combined with Seattle ’s goal of meeting the Kyoto Protocol by 2012, means we must make alternatives to driving alone a top priority.
