Downtown Seattle

general info | photo gallery | map

Downtown Seattle is the commercial heart of our funky metropolis, the daily destination of hundreds of thousands of commuters, a central hub for our excellent bus transit system, a gathering place for workers, shoppers, parade-goers, sports fans, protestors and tourists from all walks of life. The downtown area houses artists in lofts, homeless people in shelters, timeless art in world-class museums, the Pine and Pike Street shopping, movie, theater and restaurant corridors that hop on weekend evenings, the famous Pike Street Market with its colorful flowers, fish and fruits, the Seattle Municipal Government and City Hall, Qwest Field and Safeco Field, our dual open-air sports and event stadiums, jazz and other music clubs, urban parks and fountains -- an infinitive list of sights and sounds as diverse as Seattle residents.

Every year there are hundreds of events that Seattle residents gather for and enjoy in the Downtown area, including the Bon Marche Holiday Parade, the SEAFAIR Torchlight Parade, dozens of walks and runs for charitable organizations, and popular conventions and trade shows at the Washington State Convention Center, such as the Flower and Garden Show. Just to the north of Downtown is the Seattle Center and our elegant city landmark, the Space Needle, to the west lies the Waterfront area with access of dozens of ferries, cruise ships and port and maritime attractions and businesses, to the east are the neighborhoods First Hill and Capitol Hill, and to the south is the Chinatown-International District, not to mention the international and founding headquarters of Starbucks Coffee.

Multi-colored trolleys, horse-drawn carriages and of course The Mighty Duck can all be seen on downtown streets. Stroll down to Pioneer Square on the southwest edge of Downtown, and you can take an Underground Tour of the older city that lies beneath our streets. The dramatic Seattle Central Library lies in the heart of the city, a translucent wonder hailed world-round as one of the most innovative architectual designs of the new century.

Summing up Downtown Seattle is an enjoyable challenge...come see it and decide for yourself.
