Ballard is one of Seattle's oldest neighborhoods, with Scandinavian roots and strong ties with the marine industry. It is a hub for area artists, musicians, creative boutiques and gourmet bistros. The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks are also known as the Ballard Locks due to their location here, connecting Puget Sound with Lake Washington via the Ship Canal.

Other local attractions include Archie McPhee's, which carries toys, gifts and novelties that are truly novel, the luxurious Majestic Bay Movie Theatre, and the Nordic Heritage Museum, with galleries highlighting the achievements of people from all the Nordic countries in the Pacific Northwest.
