Computer Classes:
Seniors Training Seniors in Computer Basics

The very successful Senior Training Seniors program provides volunteer senior trainers and patience to help other seniors learn to use computers, the Internet and email for staying in touch with friends and family, creating cards, working with photos, finding health information online and much more...in a fun and relaxed environment. Class size is limited to six. Classes can be repeated and are designed to go at a reasonable pace. The first groups of Senior Trainers organized computer basics and Internet skills classes in six centers during Summer, 2000.  Over 800 seniors were trained in the first two years! Still going strong, the program continues to expand and move into computer labs in new areas of the city.

Patti-lyn Bell in the Mayors Office for Senior Citizens coordinates registration information.   These classes are intended for Seniors with little or no prior experience working with computers.

Curriculum: Seniors Training Seniors in
Computer Technology

Our training curriculum has been successfully used to train an average of 500 seniors per year. Covering basic computer skills, the Internet, and e-mail, the program consists of lesson plans for four, two-hour classroom sessions. Included is the downloadable training text, links to online practice exercises, and additional supporting materials for students and trainers.

Study of Senior Technology in Seattle

This report provides recommendations for use of $35,000 from the Community Technology Fund that was allocated for a Senior Project by the City Council in August 1997. The report contains information that formed the basis of those recommendations and provides a solid assessment of the topic of seniors and computer technology in Seattle that may be useful for other projects.
