ABOUT THE BURGLARY UNIT Aside from auto related crimes, the most likely crime the average person is likely to experience is that of a burglary. Burglaries are most often a crime of opportunity, with offenders grabbing items that are portable and easy to sell. An average burglar can be in and out of a home in a matter of minutes and will quickly sell the stolen item for cash immediately following the break-in. Each of the five precincts houses a Burglary and Theft Unit. The detectives were decentralized to the Precincts five years ago to maximize the timely exchange of information between detectives and patrol officers. They also work closely with the Crime Prevention Coordinators that work in the precincts to educate individuals on ways to reduce their risk of becoming victims. Working in tandem, the chance of identifying, arresting and charging those responsible for these crimes has improved greatly.
