3.170 – Honoring Those Killed in the Line of Duty

3.170-POL

The Department and its members pay tribute to fallen officers and in a demonstration of respect and honor shall adhere to the protocols set forth below.

1. Defining Terms Used in this Section

2. The Department Will Recognize Peace Officers’ Memorial Day

On May 15th of each year all police facility flags will fly at half-staff in recognition of Peace Officers’ Memorial Day.

3. The Department Will Recognize Line of Duty Deaths

Upon the death of a Seattle Police Officer or Seattle Firefighter the mourning band shall be affixed and must remain affixed until the internment or memorial service is complete. Officers may choose to keep the mourning band affixed for 72 hours after the internment or memorial service is complete for Seattle Police or Firefighter line of duty deaths.

For the line of duty death of a Seattle Police Officer or Firefighter, all flags at police facilities shall be lowered to half-staff at the time of death and will remain at that position until 72 hours after the internment or memorial service.

Upon the death of a local law enforcement officer, firefighter or corrections officer, the mourning band shall be affixed and must remain affixed until the internment or memorial service is complete.

4. The Chief Shall Designate the Uniform of the Day for all Killed in the Line of Duty Services

5. An Officer May Recognize Other Law Enforcement Line of Duty Deaths

Officers having a personal connection to an officer killed in the line of duty in another state may wear a mourning band until the internment or memorial service is complete.
