School Partnerships A COMMITMENT TO SCHOOL SAFETY The Seattle Police Department is committed to working in partnership with area schools to ensure the safety of all students. In addition to our other youth outreach programs, our Department also has ongoing prevention and intervention programs in both Seattle Public and Private schools. Not all programs are available in all schools; programs are either dependent on specific grants, or based on available department resources and school need. EXAMPLES OF POLICE-SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS School Emphasis TeamsSchool Resource Police Officers are assigned to work full-time in schools to identify at risk youth and engage in constructive outreach, instructional activities, and mentoring. Options, Choices, ConsequencesA specialized curriculum presented to middle school students on the legal and medical consequences of gun violence. School Traffic Safety ProgramProvides school zone speed enforcement during assembly and dismissal hours. Assign Traffic Unit officers to follow up on traffic safety needs and complaints with all elementary schools. Adopt-a-SchoolPatrol officers' drop in for periodic visits with elementary students in informal settings (e.g. lunchrooms, playgrounds) to open lines of communication and foster positive interaction between young children and police officers.
