WHAT IS THE AED PROGRAM? The Seattle Police Department in partnership with the Seattle Police Foundation will be one of the first major city police agencies to have life-saving devices known as AEDs (automated external defibrillators) in all of its 225 patrol cars by June 2007. According to the American Heart Association, sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in the nation, striking an estimated 335,000 people each year or about 918 people each day. The AEDs, designed and manufactured in Seattle and costing a total of $630,000, was made possible due to the generosity of Craig and Julie Tall, community members who donated $100,000, and the donation of $375,000 by the Phillips Medical System. The remaining cost of the project will be funded by the Foundation.
