Support for Special Olympics

WHAT IS THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS PROGRAM?

Special Olympics provides a year-round program of sports training and competition for children and adults with developmental disabilities. The vision of Special Olympics is to change the world's perception of the developmentally disabled and their role in society and to develop the skills they need to be active participants in our community.

Special Olympics was founded in 1968 to meet the needs of the developmentally disabled. During that year one thousand athletes from 26 states and Canada competed at Soldier Field in Chicago amid the grandeur of an Olympics Games setting.

Today, Special Olympics has grown to more than one million athletes worldwide. But there are still many more people that we can reach. To learn more about what Special Olympics is doing around the United States and in 156 countries please visit our national affiliate, Special Olympics International, Inc. at specialolympics.org.
