The Seattle Police Department has a long and rich history of partnering with communities throughout the city to address quality of life, as well as crime and disorder issues. We believe that the only way to provide services that make a difference is to work cooperatively and in partnership with communities. We have seen all to often the outcome of targeted enforcement that moves a problem out of a neighborhood, only to have it return when the police move on. HISTORY OF MEETING COMMUNITY NEEDS Beginning in the 1970’s with one of the country’s first Block Watch Programs, to connecting with individuals through E-Newsletters and other technology based means, SPD has lead the way nationally in its approach to serving the community. RESPECTING COMMUNITY STRENGTHS Community partnerships allow us to change the role of police from one of “rescuer” to that of “partner”. We are especially proud of our innovative and successful Community Councils that allow individuals to participate based on where they live (geographic), who they are (demographics), or issue related concerns. We also strive to work in concert with other City, County, and private businesses, as oftentimes, police action is only a small part of the solution to a problem. The Seattle Police Department welcomes community input, involvement and feedback. We know that our ability to provide quality public services rests on the trust and support of those we serve. |
