WEST Precinct Captain Jim DERMODY
More about the Captain
The police officers and staff at the West Precinct as well as the 911 operators who work in the 911 Center co-located with us; want to wish all of our residents, business owners, employees at small and large companies, non-profit staff and others who come to downtown and its surrounding neighborhoods a Happy Holiday Season.
Our officers provide service with pride and dedication every day for the neighborhoods of the Downtown Business District, Waterfront, Chinatown/International District, Pioneer Square, Belltown, Queen Anne, West Edge, SoDo, Westlake, Eastlake, Seattle Center, Denny Triangle, Magnolia, and South Lake Union. Our West Precinct officers provide this service guided by my three priorities of safety, professionalism and innovation.
Chief of Police Jim Pugel’s guiding principles of Justice, Excellence, Humility and Harm Reduction focus our efforts each day. Whether it’s working on innovative initiatives such as Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (L.E.A.D.) for non-violent drug and prostitution offenders, an academic study funded by the DOJ’s C.O.P.S. Office for chronic juvenile hotspots of crime and disorder, or the use of uncommitted time using 911 call data and Directed Patrols using the “Koper” deployment, we will continue to look for new ways to fight crime and disorder and the associated fear of it.
We will continue to focus on alignment among the three branches of city and county government which all touch public safety in defined ways. Operations such as Happy Holidays, the Drug Market Initiative, “Blade Runner” and “Wafer Thin,” and the daily work of our partnership with the Washington State Department of Corrections highlight the fact that arrest and incarceration are a necessary (and stakeholder demanded) function of an effective public safety strategy. Continued support from our city and county prosecutors as well as our city and county judges hearing misdemeanor and felony cases is integral to gaining ground, not just holding it.
To the community members who comprise my Precinct Advisory Council: thank you for your time and talent this year and heading into next. We know this is not your only volunteer effort. We appreciate your commitment, advice and insight.
Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas.
Captain Jim Dermody
West Precinct Commander
