Chief R. Gil Kerlikowske R. Gil Kerlikowske is a 35-year law enforcement veteran and was appointed as the Chief of Police for the Seattle Police Department on August 14, 2000. DEPARTMENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS Chief Kerlikowske has made numerous contributions to the Seattle Police Department during his tenure. Some of the Chief's major accomplishments have been:
PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS Chief Kerlikowske was a former deputy director for the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services that provides federal grants to local police agencies in support of community policing services. He served as the police commissioner for Buffalo, New York, where his selection by the mayor became the first outside appointment in 30 years. He also served as the chief of police for two Florida cities, Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie, of which both cities received the Attorney General’s Crime Prevention Award. He began his law enforcement career in 1972 as a police officer for the St. Petersburg Police, (Florida). Kerlikowske also served in the U.S. Army Military Police. PROFESSIONAL ENHANCEMENT Chief Kerlikowske is an active participant in many law enforcement-related positions and offices. He serves as Vice President of the Major Cities Chiefs Association, which is an organization composed of 55 largest law enforcement agencies in the U.S. He is an member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, which is the world’s oldest and largest non-profit membership organization of police executives. He serves as an executive boardmember to the Northwest High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) that addresses the demand reduction of importation and local drug trafficking. He is member of the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs and the King County Police Chiefs Association to enhance cooperation and develop partnerships between law enforcement agencies within King County and Washington State. He is also a notable speaker and spokesperson on law enforcement issues – having the opportunity to address nationwide viewers and listeners of major television and radio stations such as ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, FOX, MSNBC, BBC, PBS, and NPR; including readers of USA Today, Seattle Times, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, Philadelphia Inquirer, and the Washington Times. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT In addition to his professional and personal responsibilities, Chief Kerlikowske is committed to giving his time to Seattle citizens and community organizations – attending a variety of citywide events throughout the year. He is an active boardchair of a national anti-crime organization called Fight Crime: Invest in Kids that looks into the research and reasons on how to prevent kids from becoming criminals. He maintains an adjunct professor role in state universities and colleges teaching law enforcement courses. He serves on the Seattle/King County Advisory Board of the Salvation Army, either feeding the hungry or helping the homeless. As an active runner, the chief also participates in many local charitable races. PROFESSIONAL AWARDS Throughout his career, he has received many awards and accolades. He was recently nominated for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer 2004 Jefferson Award for his leadership and compassion in preventing youth crime and violence. Chief Kerlikowske received a one-year fellowship to evaluate police procedures throughout the country from the U.S. Department of Justice in 1985. He was a 1990 recipient of the Gary Hayes National Memorial Award for Innovation in Policing, an award sponsored by the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), and where he served as the president between 1996 and 1998. In 1970, he was named the Outstanding Military Police Officer Honor Graduate, and later received a U.S. Army Presidential Service Medal. EDUCATION He holds a B.A. and M.A. in criminal justice from the University of South Florida in Tampa, and is a graduate of the National Executive Institute at the Federal Bureau of Investigations Academy in Quantico, Virginia. |
