Learn more about our mission and values. HOW WE ARE MEETING THE MAYOR'S PRIORITIES Keep our neighborhoods safe The Seattle Police Department protects public safety in many ways, ranging from officers patrolling beats to the deployment of special teams and task forces. Task forces focus on a variety of issues, such as auto theft, drug dealing and violence, and crimes against children. As part of Mayor Nickels' efforts to make Seattle the most prepared city in America, the department is administering more than $24 million in grant funding for homeland security protection in the city. Build strong families and healthy communities The Seattle Police Department has several programs focusing on community issues, such as child welfare, alcohol abuse, safe driving in school zones and neighborhoods, and drug use. The department also works closely with 10 community advisory councils representing various communities to strengthen the relationship between members of those communities and police. The councils meet monthly so that needs and concerns can be openly discussed and solutions to community issues can be developed. Get Seattle moving As motorists and pedestrians move around the community efficiently, the Seattle Police Department is responsible for enforcing traffic laws on city streets to increase public safety. Recent initiatives such as the Red Light Camera Project and the Aggressive Drivers Response Team support this priority, including ongoing drunk driving enforcement and routine traffic enforcement. By this year, there will be 30 automatic cameras at traffic lights in use at 22 intersections to cite motorists who endanger drivers and pedestrians by running red lights. The Aggressive Drivers Response Team also improves pedestrian and driver safety throughout the streets of Seattle, and is one of the multi-faceted approach to tackling the serious problem of road rage. |
